| In April 1998, Nintendo released another version of the Pocket GameBoy called the EL Backlight Pocket GameBoy. This version had an electro-luminescence backlight feature that allowed the playing of games in total darkness. The EL Backlight GameBoy is slightly larger than the Pocket GameBoy and has a protruding battery compartment. It came in Silver and Gold but was never released out side of Japan.
