I bought GameBoy Color today (21 Oct 98) and immediately started playing Tetris DX and Dragon Quest Monsters. It feels fresh as both are completely new games and very colorful. The color liquid crystal display was clearer than I had imagined it would be. Even at a distance. But because there wasn't a button for color and brightness control, I couldn't see the graphics well unless I sat up straight. That in my opinion is one of the drawbacks of the system. The body of the Color GameBoy is rounded on the whole but I feel that Nintendo should have included a strap on the upper left part of the body where there is a hole so it would be easier to grip and less worry in case I dropped it. The infrared port has now taken the place of where the power switch used to be on the top left, and out of habit, I tend to often reach for it there. The power switch is now placed on the right side. It's weight also seems heavier than that stated in the catalog specification but with this weight, it would have been better if the Color GameBoy fits the palm better so one can have a more secure grip when playing. The opening screen has also changed. Previously, the Nintendo logo scrolled from above. Now, the logo just appears colorfully displayed when the machine is switched on. For color imbedding, it follows the conventional Super GameBoy palette and there are 12 selections to choose from. You cannot make your own color palette. And to change colors, you are required to push the control button when the game opening screen is displayed. In conclusion, my impression of the Color GameBoy is that it is satisfactory. I only hope however that Nintendo will later decide to do something and increase the ability for the system to enhance game graphics with more colors. |
