Pokemon Gold & Silver - By Shoji reporting from Japan

My visit to Nintendo Space World was an eventful experience, mainly because the crowds were huge and it was almost impossible to move around freely. Trying out the new version of Pokemon was not only a test of endurance, but patience as well, due to the long lines and short playing time.

Still, it was worth the wait, since I was able to try the game. We were not allowed to take pictures of the screen, but I did manage secretly to take only one picture of a new grass type Pokemon called Chicolita. As mentioned, Nintendo intends to release the game on 21st November, but this is not an actual confirmation. The good news is that Pokemon Gold and Silver will be compatible with all versions of GameBoys.

I also noticed a few other new Pokemon while trying the game, and you can see their names and descriptions below. Unfortunately, I could not take a picture.

  • "HINOARASHI" - HI means 'Fire', ARASHI means 'Storm'. A Flame type Pokemon which looks like a hedgehog. This is one of the Pokemon that the hero gets to select first.
  • "WANINOKO" - WANI means 'The crocodile', KO means 'Child'. A Water type Pokemon which looks like a crocodile. This is one of the Pokemon that the hero gets to select first.

The box art for Pokemon Gold & Silver is outstanding. You can see that the art now focusses on the Legendary Birds.

Another big Pokemon event at the show was the download of secret character Mew to your Pokemon cartridge.
