Sakura Pocket

Utilizing the same shell and controls as the popular Pocket Pikachu Color, this pink version of the Pocket Sakura Color has you virtually dating and taking care of a Sakura girl character instead of a monster or animal type pet. It also boast infra-red connectivity with the GameBoy version of the game and has a built-in pedometer. The Pocket Sakura Color is sold together with the GameBoy game, and is one of a special five package release to commemorate the first GameBoy port of this immensely popular Sega title. The "Pocket Sakura Package" will retail for Yen 8,300 and will be released in late July 2000 in Japan. Dance Dance Revolution

Shoji's recent visit to the Tokyo Toy Show unveiled news of Konami's plan to release its new LCD hand-held game called Dance Dance Revolution. DDR comes after the immensely popular Beat Mania Part 1 and Part 2. Like Beat Mania, DDR is based on the actual arcade version. In the US, Konami's music games aren't very well known, but in Japan, they dominate the floor space of every amusement park and video game parlor. For those that don't know, DDR is a game that simulates dancing. Players follow on screen instructions from the computer which tells them when to place their feet in four different directions on a floor pad. Steps that are well executed and in time to the music, are awarded points. The hand-held version will follow the same principle, although players will now use their fingers instead of their feet. Konami's arcade music machines will undoubtedly make an impact on American shores (if and when they get there), and might even prove itself as popular as Pokemon.

Cool? EAGB surmises that only the Ultimate Pokemaster could identify all of them just by their voices. Suggested retail price for the Pokedex is Yen 5,800 (Approx US$55 because of the high exchange rate now). It will be available on the 11th of December although pre-orders can be made as soon as now. EAGB will definitely want to get it's hands on one. No news yet on a US release.

Bakuso Senki Metal Walker

Capcom introduces their version of the latest Pedometer/ Game called "Bakuso Senki Metal Walker". While most games of this genre are cute, Metal Walker is instead rugged and masculine. The object of the game is to develop the world's toughest robot. So we figure it should cater to just the boys.

Picture 01

As in other pedometer games, Metal Walker will count the owner's footsteps. An on-screen Alien will be the player's constant companion and he must use the built-in radar and compass indicator to seek or avoid battles with unfriendly robots and search for items and power ups. Metal Walker is also linkable with the hatch covers opened for a one-on-one battle with a fellow Metal Walker. Suggested retail price when released at the end of October is 2,480 Yen.

Picture 01

Pocket Pikachu

Pocket Pikachu (starring the wildly popular Pikachu character). What separates this from any standard virtual pet is that he'll grow based upon how much he walks, which is in turn based upon how much the toy's owner walks. An interesting concept we'd say. Pocket Pikachu was released in Japan on March 27th for about US$20. However, there is no news of a worldwide release so you might have to look for it in import shops. Here's a Pikachu diary with pictures by Valerie.

Heard at E3 in Atlanta - New Life To Old Games

Hasbro Interactive is using technology to bring new life to several old games. Over the next few months, Hasbro will be releasing inexpensive handheld versions of two classic board games — Monopoly and Candyland, but Hasbro's big news is the pending release of an updated version of the Atari arcade classic Centipede.

Hasbro hopes to build an entire collection of nostalgic updated games. (Hasbro recently purchased the rights to Atari's entire library of games.) Interactive CandyLand: "Mr. Mint Talks" More than 15 years have passed since Atari released the original game, and the state of computing has changed drastically. All of the action in the original Centipede took place on a single screen with players shooting at multi-sectional centipedes as they snaked their way down from the top of the screen.

In Hasbro's new 3D thriller, however, centipedes, snakes, fleas, and other pests come from all directions as players try to retrieve humans and protect their towns. The new version can be played from multiple camera angles including a first-person 3D perspective. Look out for it! Yeah...?
